Calling all art lovers! Are you the kind of person that gets star-struck at art galleries? Clothes covered in paint all the time? Love the excitement of buying new art supplies? Then you fit into our description of an 'Art Nerd'!


We want to know what being an Art Nerd means to you! Show us how much you love art by submitting an artwork inspired by the theme of 'Art Nerd'. It can be an illustration, painting, or digital piece- something that captures your passion for creating!

Become a Published Artist!

All 12 winners will be featured in the 2020 Art Nerd wall calendar, which will be published and released in January 2020. Each winner will have their artwork featured in the calendar and become a published artist! Plus, all 12 winners will have their artwork exhibited as part of the Winged Canvas Gallery Holiday Art Show (November 22, 2019 - January 5, 2020).


Markham's Ultimate Art Contest is open to all students in grades 4 - 12 living or going to school in Markham, ON. One grand prize winner will be selected in each age category.

How to Enter

All pieces not selected must be picked up between Saturday, November 16 - Sunday, November 17, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

All other artwork (traditional drawings, paintings, etc.) can be dropped off in person at Winged Canvas: 185 Bullock Drive, Unit #1, Markham before the deadline.

1st Place Contest Winner 2016



Each piece is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. Pieces that do not follow the guidelines will be disqualified. All entries must be the entrant's original, unpublished, and previously unproduced work. The contest will be judged by a panel of professional artists and instructors​

Artwork Specifications:

  • Entries should be an illustration or comic (mediums accepted are drawing, painting and digital artwork).

  • Artwork size must be square (minimum size 8 x 8 inches, maximum size 12 x 12 inches).

  • Artwork must be themed around your interpretation of what it means to be an "Art Nerd."

  • Submit a good quality JPG, PNG or PDF file that is no larger than 2MB.

  • Label your artwork with your full name and age on the back of the original or in the file name (firstname_lastname_age12.jpg).

  • Using text/typography is allowed.


Artwork Options & Tips:

These are just tips; there are no limits to what you use to create artwork, whether digitally or on paper!

  • Digital artwork: Try programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, or iPad/Android apps.

  • Traditional artwork: Try pencil, pen, pencil crayons, markers, acrylic or poster paints.

  • Keep the art simple & easy to understand.

  • Focus on ONE idea (avoid combining multiple ideas. Instead, you can submit up to 3 artworks).

  • Using text/typography is allowed.


By submitting an entry, the entrant:

  • Certifies that the entry submitted is entirely original.

  • Takes any and all legal responsibility for breaches of copyright caused by plagiarism.

  • Grants Winged Canvas permission to reproduce the submitted work, in whole or in part, for any purpose, on the internet, in print publications and/or in any other medium and to publish the entrant's credits (name and age) in conjunction with the work.

  • Authorizes persons accessing or any affiliated websites to view, download, alter and print the work for promotional, personal and classroom educational purposes.
