Raffi Anderian is a Toronto-based artist painting landscape and figurative works in oils. He has a thirty year background as an editorial illustrator, mainly for the Toronto Star Newspaper. He has also been published in The Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times. He graduated with honors from the Sheridan College Illustration program in 1985. His figurative work focuses on celebrity, narcissism and online self-objectification vs self-empowerment. These are executed using old master methods but with a more contemporary aesthetic. Raffi’s landscapes and cityscapes are also painted in oils, but with a more direct approach. In 2014, he created “Raffi’s Toronto” - a monthly feature in the Star. Prints and calendars created from these small paintings were sold to thousands of followers of his work.
Raffi joined Winged Canvas in 2019 to teach Art Mentorship, Intensive Drawing and various painting courses. Awards and recognitions include the Mobius Awards, Society of News Design, National Newspaper Awards, Art Director’s Club and Creativity New York. His illustrations are designated cultural property and are part of the permanent collection of the Library Archives Canada.
