8 Essential Elements of Design

The elements of design are the basic building blocks that make up any picture. Using these elements in different combinations will create a unique feeling for your piece.


Have fun and experiment with these!
























One or more elements are usually used in combination in a piece. For example, you can use thin lines and light colours to suggest an airy feeling, or use heavy contrast and playful shapes to give your piece an exciting feeling. The way you use these elements of design are referred to as principles.
