Art Intensives - Online Winter Camps for Teens (12+)

Art Intensives are online camps designed to accelerate learning and creative growth in a short period of time with personal guidance from professional artists. Winter break is the ideal time to learn some serious art skills or create original artwork for a school portfolio! 

 

Teens will gain perspective on creative careers, and get ahead of the curve by improving artistic techniques in comics, figure drawing, graphic design and illustration.

Join us LIVE from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm and 1:30 - 3:00 pm ET in our virtual art studio!

🕚 Art Intensives take place daily at 11:00am - 12:30pm and 1:30 - 3:00pm (EST)

with a 1 hour lunch break.

Dec 27 - 31 (5 Day Camp) 🎨 Illustration


🕙 5 day camp, 15 hours total Learn the art of illustration with comic and concept artist Jessie Chang! We’ll be focusing on many aspects of illustration, such as interpretive illustration, book and game covers, concept art, and more! Students will learn about style development and visual storytelling and how to portray meaningful imagery through visual language. Take your illustrative skills to the next level with personalized projects, 1-on-1 guidance and feedback from your art mentor! 🗒️ Lessons: Composition design, style exploration, colour schemes and colour theory, digital shading and blending, digital illustration techniques and shortcuts ✍️ Projects: Book/Game covers, character and background concept art, art style challenges, interpretive word illustration 🎨 Materials:

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Ruler
  • Black fineliner pen
  • Coloured pencils
  • 9 x 12" or larger paper / sketchbook.
  • Optional: Watercolour, Marker
  • Students may also illustrate digitally**
**Demos will be done digitally in MediBang Paint Pro, a free drawing software. Students are permitted to work in whatever software they are most comfortable with, but we recommend beginners follow along using the same program. Dec 27 - 31 (5 Day Camp) ✍ Graphic Design


Jay's emote design demo 🕑 5 day camp, 15 hours total Learn what graphic designers do, and how much value design thinking brings to our everyday lives! First, we’ll take a deep dive into the 10 principles of design — to understand design fundamentals. Then we’ll apply those principles in digital projects such as logo and poster design that explore typography and iconography. Students will also have the option to work on personal projects and get one-on-one guidance and support from Jay Lintag, an award-winning graphic designer.
🗒️ Lessons: Elements and principles of design, typography 101, how to use design tools and software, composition, design hierarchy, colour schemes

✍️ Projects: Emotes, Custom Alphabet Design, Logo Design 🎨 Materials:

  • Recommended digital art software: Figma (Free), MediBang Paint Pro (Free)**
  • Recommended hardware: Mouse
  • Traditional mediums: Pencil, Eraser, Fine liner/black pen/ink, marker/pencil crayon
**Students are allowed to work in whatever digital drawing software they are comfortable with, but please note that the instructor may not be able to assist the student if they are unfamiliar with their program. Dec 20 - 23 (4 Day Camp) 🦵 Figure Drawing


Figure Drawing Human Proportions 🕑 4 day camp, 12 hours total Improve your figure drawing skills in this four day art intensive program for teens. Led by figurative artist Fei Lu, students will practice sketching quick gestures as well as drawing detailed realistic human bodies in 3D with advanced shading techniques. Learn how to draw dynamic figures, including hands, heads, structure drawing and anatomy — recommended for illustration and animation portfolios! 🗒️ Lessons: Human proportions, gesture drawing of dynamic poses, timed drawing practice, how to construct figures using the GSL method, simple vs complex forms in the human body, shading techniques, understanding anatomy, foreshortening. ✍️ Project: Human anatomy drawing with shading. ✏️ Materials:

  • Pencil set (4H, HB, 4B) or Charcoal / conte
  • Sharpener
  • Rubber eraser
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Ruler
  • 11 x 14"+ paper / sketchbook
  • Large newsprint or bond drawing pad (optional)
  • Students may draw digitally, traditionally, or a combination of both.

Dec 20 - 23 (4 Day Camp) 💬 Comics & Manga


🕑 4 day camp, 15 hours total If you dream of creating your own original comic, especially manga, this is the camp for you! Learn how to draw manga characters and explore the art of visual storytelling with artist and animator Elina Nie, also known as @teasketches on Instagram. Students will work on personal projects and get 1-on-1 feedback and guidance on how to create an original comic from their art mentor. 🗒️ Lessons: Planning a narrative, worldbuilding, drawing environments, character design, combining text with visuals, comic composition. ✍️ Projects: Plan and develop an original comic. ✏️ Materials:

  • Recommended digital art software: MediBang Paint Pro (Free)**
  • Recommended hardware: Digital drawing tablet and stylus
  • Traditional mediums: Pencil, Eraser, Fine liner/black pen/ink, marker/pencil crayon
