Art Intensives - Summer Camp for Teens

July 12 - August 27, 2021

Art Intensives are camps designed to accelerate learning and creative growth in a short period of time with personal guidance from an Artist Mentor. Summer is the ideal time to learn some serious art skills, create amazing artwork and meet new friends!

LIVE weekdays from 11:00am - 3:00pm EDT in our virtual art studio. Only 12 spots are available for each lesson to ensure the best learning experience.

🕚 Art Intensives take place daily at 11:00am - 12:30pm and 1:30 - 3:00pm (EDT/EST)

with a 1 hour lunch break.

July 26 - 30 🦵 Figure Drawing 1


Figure Drawing Human Proportions 🕙 5 day camp, 15 hours total Learn the fundamentals of figure drawing in this one week program, suitable for teens with some prior drawing experience. Students will learn how to sketch quick gestures as well as realistic human bodies, including hands and heads -- great practice for art school portfolios! Topics will include shape, proportion, and gesture. We’ll also cover how to draw realistic 2D male and female figures. Lessons are taught step-by-step with room for extra guidance as needed. Sharpen your figure drawing skills under the guidance and mentorship of artist Jessie Chang.
Lessons: Gesture Drawing, Body Proportions, Facial Proportions, Dynamic poses, Simplifying Forms, Shading Techniques ✍️Projects: Proportion Drawing, Quick Gesture Drawing, Action Poses, Heads & Faces, Hands & Feet ✏️ Materials:

  • Pencil set (4B, HB, 4B) or Charcoal / conte

Aug 9 - 13 🎨 Illustration


🕙5 day camp, 15 hours total

Learn how to apply your drawing and painting skills to produce a variety of exciting projects, like story illustrations or designing cover art for your favourite song! Students will learn the art of illustration, including concept development, visual storytelling, style exploration, composition, and design. Take your illustration skills to the next level under the guidance and mentorship of digital illustrator Jessie Chang. Lessons: Ideas into doodles, composition, style exploration, colour schemes
✍️ Projects: Fantasy Illustration, Quirky Idioms, Music Album Cover 🎨 Materials:

Jul 12 - 16 âœï¸ Character Design 1


🕑 5 day camp, 15 hours total If you love creating your own characters, or have fantasized about being a character designer for entertainment, this is the camp for you! Learn the creative process behind designing unique and memorable characters based on a variety of exploration exercises and fan art mashups. Discover the awesome world of character art in movies, games and illustration!
Lessons: Shape Language, Exaggeration & Stylization, Facial Expressions, Body Language, Outfit and Accessory Design, Colour Schemes Projects: Character Mashups, Expression Sheet, Character Illustration ✏️Materials:

Aug 16 - 20 ✍️ Animation 2


🕑​​​​​​​ 5 day camp, 15 hours total Animation 2 goes deeper into advanced techniques and principles, including animating a walk cycle, moving background, and an open project that offers students the chance to animate something of their choice! Demos will be done digitally using Krita, a free open source program used by professional animators.

Learn the art of making things move, and practice your animation skills under the guidance of professional animator Yeri Sa. ✍️ Projects: Walk Cycle, Open Project 💻 Materials: Software: Krita (free app) Hardware: Digital drawing tablet and stylus. Jul 19 - 23 💻 Digital Painting 1


🕙 5 day camp, 15 hours total This beginner-friendly specialized art camp is designed specifically for teens seeking to learn digital art and painting techniques! Core lessons will be taught step-by-step using MediBang Paint Pro, allowing students to explore digital art techniques through guided themed projects. There will also be open work periods for students to create a personal piece with their own subject and get individual feedback and guidance. ​ Lessons: Digital tools, layer styles, colour selection, blending, shading, composition Projects: Still Life, Isometric Room, Character Art, Background Art

Aug 9 - 13 ✍️ Animation 1


🕙 5 day camp, 15 hours total Animation 1 explores the 12 principles of animation with mini step by step projects designed to illustrate movement. Learn how to make a character blink (it's harder than it seems!), animate expressions on faces and show transformation for a project inspired by the theme of metamorphosis. Demos will be done digitally using Krita, a free open source program used by professional animators! Aug 3 - 6 ✍️ Animation Basics

If you've ever wanted to turn your art into animations, or animate your original characters, this camp will show you the basics of digital animation using Krita, a free open source painting program used by professional animators! Learn the art of making things move, and explore rhythm under the guidance of professional animator Yeri Sa. Students will learn the basic tools and functions of Krita, and how to animate using the squash and stretch principle. We'll design a "round" character around that animation to bring it to life! Students will also discover the 12 principles of animation and how to apply it to their work. Jul 19 - 23 ✏️ Character Design 2


🕑 5 day camp, 15 hours total Character Design 2 is a continuation of Character Design 1, which explores more advanced concepts and skills for character design, such world building, character rotations, shading and realistic colouring techniques. The instructor will cover game mechanics and objectives, rules, items, and world building. There is open project time when students can develop their own character rotation sheet, with individual feedback and guidance from their instructor. Lessons: What is concept art? Aug 3 - 6 💪 Figure Drawing 2


🕙 4 day camp, 12 hours total

Figure Drawing 2 is a continuation of Figure Drawing 1, suitable for those looking for advanced techniques and concepts for figure drawing. We’ll cover advanced drawing techniques such as shading, form, 3D form, structure drawing and bodies in perspective. Students will learn to draw more detailed anatomy, including realistic hands and faces. This camp is perfect for art school portfolio development! Take your figure drawing skills and stylization to the next level under the guidance and mentorship of artist Jessie Chang.
Lessons: Simple and complex 3D forms, heads and bodies in difficult angles, advanced shading techniques, drawing clothing and fabric. ✍️Projects: Timed Figure Drawing Practice, Tonal / Value Drawing, Master Study ✏️ Materials:

Jul 12 - 16 🎨 Landscape Painting


🕑 5 day camp, 15 hours total

Kick off the summer by learning how to paint colourful landscapes in acrylic! This painting camp is suitable for those who want to expand their skill set in acrylic painting. Students will learn fundamental painting techniques in acrylic such as colour mixing, brushwork, impasto, glazing, blending and layering.

Lessons: Sketching, Composition, Value, Form, Texture, Colour Schemes

Projects: Cottage Country, Exotic Landscape, Fantasy Landscape, and one personal painting of your choice! 🎨Materials:

  • Acrylic Paints:
    Simple Palette: White, Black, Brown, Primary Yellow, Red, and Blue OR
    Expanded Palette: White, Black, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue
  • Canvases x 4 (9 x 12" or larger, assorted sizes)

Aug 16 - 20 💬 Comics & Manga 1


🕑 5 day camp, 15 hours total Comics & Manga 1 teaches the basics of designing your very own comic, including writing a narrative, character design, world building/environment design, and panel layouts! All demos will be taught digitally in Photoshop CC, but students have the choice to work digitally, traditionally, or a combination of both. Learn the art of comic and manga art under the guidance of comic artist and instructor Jessie Chang. Lessons: Planning a narrative, World building and environment design, Writing and designing characters, Scriptwriting and speech bubbles, Storyboarding and Panel Layouts ✍️ Projects: Comic strips and 4-komas, character sheets, backgrounds in perspective, dynamic poses, open project ✏️ Materials: Recommended digital art software: MediBang Paint Pro (Free)** Recommended hardware: Digital drawing tablet and stylus Traditional mediums: Pencil, Eraser, Fine liner/black pen/ink, marker/pencil crayon Related Camps: Digital Painting 1 & 2, Illustration, Character Design 1 & 2 **Students are allowed to work in whatever digital drawing software they are comfortable with, but please note that the instructor may not be able to assist the student if they are unfamiliar with their program.




Aug 23 - 27 ðŸ’¬ Comics & Manga 2


🕑 5 day camp, 15 hours total Comics & Manga 2 is a continuation of Comics & Manga 1, teaching the illustrative techniques needed for drawing a completed comic, including line art, colour theory, perspective, and composition. By the end of the week, students will have a completed comic in full colour! All demos will be taught digitally in Photoshop CC, but students have the choice to work digitally, traditionally, or a combination of both. Take your comics to the next level under the guidance and mentorship of comic artist Jessie Chang.
Lessons: Sketching a comic, Line art, Colour theory, Shading and cleanup techniques ✍️ Project: Illustrate a full narrative scene of your own comic! ✏️ Materials: Recommended digital art software: Medibang Paint Pro** Recommended hardware: Digital drawing tablet and stylus Traditional mediums: Pencil, Eraser, Fine liner/black pen/ink, marker/pencil crayon Related Camps: Digital Painting 1 & 2, Illustration, Character Design 1 & 2 **Students are allowed to work in whatever digital drawing software they are comfortable with, but please note that the instructor may not be able to assist the student if they are unfamiliar with their program.




Aug 23 - 27 🧑 Portrait Painting


🕑 5 day camp, 15 hours total This is a drawing and painting program suitable for those who want to expand their skillset in capturing realistic faces and portraits, under the guidance of figurative artist Fei Lu. Students will learn facial proportions and realistic drawing fundamentals such as value, shading, skin tones, and painting techniques such as colour mixing, brushwork, glazing, blending and layering.

Try a variety of media, such as pencil, coloured pencils, pen, watercolour, acrylic, oil, or digital! Demonstrations will be done in pencil, coloured pencil, acrylic and digital.
Lessons: Drawing Facial Proportions, Value / Monochromatic Portrait, Skull Studies, Skin Tones, Step by step portrait

✍️ Projects: Realistic portrait in pencil, caricature in coloured pencil, painting in acrylic / oil, one open subject painting of your choice. 🎨 Materials:
